New girl in pitchperfect6/1/2023 Lily (Hana Mae Lee) is comically meek - literally silent and nervous, while Beca's roommate Kimmy (Jinhee Joung) does the frosty, alienating 'ugh, white people' thing. If Pitch Perfect is going for irony, it's failing miserably, as the portrayal of non-WASP characters is most jarring. Joyous routines and flashes of wit aren't worth enduring Ace of Base's 'The Sign' ad nauseam, with great performers in roles solely defined by sexual or racial stereotypes. Meanwhile, Beca commits the cardinal sin of becoming attracted to Jesse (Skylar Astin), singer of rival male group The Treble Makers. She joins The Bellas, an all-girl singing troupe resembling air hostesses who hope to recover from a disastrous finalé where lead singer and queen bee Aubrey (Anna Camp) projectile vomited. The delightful but innately prim Anna Kendrick is woefully miscast as the hip, sulky DJ and student Beca, persuaded by her tutor father to make the most of at least one year at this high brow university before swanning off to LA with her headphones welded around her neck. Stage (Avenue Q, Shrek the Musical) and television (Dawson's Creek) director Jason Moore makes his film debut with a script by 30 Rock and New Girl writer Kay Cannon, based on the shenanigans of rival college singing groups. This misjudged a cappella musical comedy aims for the biting observation of Mean Girls crossed with the feel-good factor of Glee, but stumbles with poor characters and tiresome jokes.
